I recently joined Pinterest and found a lot of blogs through searching for DIY posts.
One which really stuck in my mind was 25 dresses and skirts, there are quite a few which I am going to try out, but I first tried an upcycled shirt. I found that the tutorial was really lacking in vital information, what thread to use and what was the best way to make it fit to the elastic.
Even though the tutorial was lacking in information it was still quite easy to make, but I decided to make the skirt, blog about it and make a better tutorial for it.
The first tutorial starts by using an old shirt...I didn't have an old shirt I was willing to potentially ruining, so I went and bought one from a local charity shop.
I then cut the shirt just under the sleeves, I did cut more off to make it shorter but I started with playing it safe.
I bought a piece of thick elastic to use as the waist band, I bought two different pieces as I am going to make another one. I also bought some shirt pins and black elastic thread
I measured the elastic to fit my waist then, pinned the skirt into place on the waist band. Because the shirt was bigger I had to fold over pieces of the shirt, but this made really nice pleats (type, things).
I used black elastic thread, I made very small stitches at the front of the waist band and bigger ones at the back. If you wanted to make sure the thread can't been seen, I suggest using invisible tread, but as I plan to wear a belt with it I didn't use it.
When I was sewing the shirt into place I folded over the edge of the shirt to stop the frayed parts sewing and to create a hem. It didn't take very long to sew it all together.
Finished piece:
I am planning to make another skirt using a proper upcycled shirt, the white one was more of a tester and with trial and error the next one will be perfect. I will blog about the next one I make as well.
