For lent this year I gave up drinking fizzy drinks as a day to day thing. I started this over a month ago and it'll be over in a few weeks and I can't wait! When I have done lent for the last two years giving up something has always been of a benefit to me, this time I only think it has made me want fizzy drinks more.
In 2010 I gave up crisps, and it worked really well. I went from eating crisps a couple of times a day (I maintain a healthy weight FYI) to eating them once or twice a week. Having a 40 day break from crisps totally changed my eating habits of crisps. In 2011 I imposed rules on my facebook use, I would only go on facebook to check my notifications, send or post something. This also worked really well. In 2012 I was too busy with my dissertation to think about giving anything up, so this year I went big and gave up my favorite drinks. It was a hard choice between fizzy drinks and Easter chocolates, but I decided 9 out of 12 months I give up Easter chocolates there was no reason to add more pain.
However, all I can think about is that when lent ends I am going to get a 2L bottle of diet coke and strawpedo the hell out of it. I will post about the joys of that when the times comes. I really hoped that having a break from fizzy drinks would curve my cravings and unfortunately I can conclude it hasn't. I will wait for the 40 days to be up, but I can really say this is the most difficult lent I have done.
